Best on the Market!
truDEF meets or exceeds ISO22241/AdBlue® standards approved as a NOx reducing agent for all diesel SCR systems
Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR)
Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology uses ammonia to break down dangerous NOx emissions produced by diesel engines into nitrogen and water. In automotive applications SCR delivers ammonia through a urea solution- Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF)- which is sprayed into the exhaust stream by an advanced injection system.
SCR is the technology of choice for the majority of truck and engine manufacturers to meet 201 0 emissions standards for heavy-duty trucks. Aside from helping the environment, the biggest benefit of SCR for vehicle owners is the fuel savings which the technology provides. Because SCR deals with emissions in the exhaust pipe, engineers are able to tune the engine to provide more torque and reduce fuel consumption.
DEF Handling & Storage
Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is a colorless, non-hazardous, and non-flammable chemical. lf DEF comes into contact with skin it can simply be washed off with water. DEF is sensitive to chemical impurities and it is essential that it is handled carefully to prevent contamination. DEF is much more likely to be damaged by the materials it touches than to cause damage to equipment.
lf DEF is contaminated, it may cause the SCR system to malfunction. This means pumps and containers used for DEF must not be used for any other fluids. It is important that tanks, pumps, hoses and nozzles previously used for other products like diesel or lube oil are not used for DEF. The requirements for handling DEF are unique.
The shelf life of DEF is two years if the fluid temperature remains between 12°F (-10°C) and 86°F (30°C). Cooling is usually achieved by insulation and ventilation. The third part of the ISO 22241 standard gives recommendations and requirements for handling, transportation and storing DEF.
Certain stainless steels and various plastic materials are suitable for storing DEF. Carbon steels, copper, copper-containing alloys and zinc-coated steels should not be used. Contact your DEF supplier for a more comprehensive list of equipment and materials that are recommended and not recommended.
SCR systems are sensitive to potential chemical impurities in the urea solution; therefore the solvent is demineralized water. The urea solution is clear, non-toxic and safe to handle. However, it can corrode some metals and so must be stored and transported carefully.
It is recommended that DEF be stored in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area that is out of direct sunlight.
Frequently Asked Questions
HOW MUCH DIESEL EXHAUST FLUID (DEF) WILL A VEHICLE CONSUME?
DEF consumption is measured as a ratio of diesel fuel use, normally termed the “dosing rate” or “treat rate.” Medium- and heavy-duty vehicles have a dosing rate of 2-3%. This means that if a vehicle has a fuel efficiency of six miles per gallon and a dosing rate of 3% it will use approximately 1 gallon of DEF every 200 miles.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF A VEHICLE RUNS OUT OF DIESEL EXHAUST FLUID (DEF)?
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency requires vehicle manufacturers to put measures in place to ensure that vehicles cannot run without Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF). Before a truck’s DEF tank runs empty the driver is given a series of alerts on the dash. If the truck is allowed to run out of DEF the engine’s power is reduced, a solid red warning will be displayed and the truck will stop running.
IS THERE ANY DANGER OF FILLING THE DIESEL EXHAUST FLUID (DEF) TANK WITH DIESEL (AND VICE-VERSA) AND WHAT PROBLEMS WILL IT CAUSE?
There are a number of safeguards put in place to prevent confusion between diesel and Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) filler necks. In addition, the filling cap for the DEF tank is blue and will be clearly marked ‘Diesel Exhaust Fluid’. If diesel fuel is accidentally put in the DEF tank, diesel is less dense than DEF and will float on top of the DEF in the tank, but even small amounts of diesel can damage your SCR system and a visit to the dealer is recommended. If DEF is accidentally put into the diesel tank, the engine will eventually stop running and the vehicle will need to be taken to a service center for repair.
WHAT FUEL SAVINGS CAN BE EXPECTED FROM A VEHICLE EQUIPPED WITH SELECTIVE CATALYTIC REDUCTION (SCR) TECHNOLOGY?
The extent of these savings will vary, but fleets’ experiences with post 2010 heavy-duty trucks suggests fuel savings of around 5% compared to 2007 models with similar engine specifications. PACCAR, Daimler and Cummins all use this figure in their 2010 model specs. Reports from customers using off-road machines with SCR are reporting fuel savings of 5% and higher.
HOW SHOULD A DEF SPILL BE TREATED?
A small spill of Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) can be washed away with water or wiped up. If you leave it to dry it will turn into white crystals. These can be washed away with water.
